I guided two ladies from Moscow, Russia to Kamakura on 4/17, and to Tokyo on the following day, 4/18.
The friendly pair visited the opening day of the Kansai Expo in Osaka, and after drawing lucky fortunes together at Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto, they went to Tokyo, demonstrating their youthful energy and athleticism. At the Kamakura Zen temple Kencho-ji, they sat on cushions on the tatami mats, closed their eyes and meditated for a while. At Kotoku-in, they were entranced by the slightly leaning Great Buddha sitting among young leaves. At the Imperial Palace Square in the center of Tokyo, they learned about Japan's postwar history and reflected on the gratitude of the age of peace. At Nikolai Cathedral in Kanda, preparations for Easter (Pasha) were underway, and they should have been able to experience for themselves that freedom of religion is guaranteed in Japan, from Shinto and Buddhism to Christianity and Orthodoxy. Although it was a short two-day tour, the two were able to experience a different culture, and after saying "thank you," they said goodbye and headed home. (Guide T. Terada)
